How to measure your storeroom to fit your storage rack
We often receive inquiries about measuring a storeroom space and selecting the right L-Shaped Rack size for home storage. In this article, we’ll use a 4-room BTO flat as an example, focusing on effective use of the space in a typical HDB Bomb Shelter room, which functions as the primary storeroom.
The HDB floor plan serves as a general reference for homeowners when planning their space. However, the size of each storeroom or HDB Bomb Shelter varies, making it essential to conduct physical measurements to ensure accurate sizing and select the ideal L-Shaped rack for storage needs.
Steps 1 - Measure The Inner Wall Dimensions
- Begin by measuring the Length of Wall A, B, C, and D based on the layout to determine the required space.
- Always take measurements from floor level, as some storerooms have Wall Skirting along the side walls. Ensure measurements are taken from skirting to skirting for accuracy.
- Allow for a 1cm to 2cm gap, as fitting a shelf too tightly is not recommended.
- Most HDB ceilings are approximately 2.6 meters high, and our storage rack has a standard height of 2 meters, making it a good fit for most HDB storerooms.
- If there is a switch box or circuit box in the storeroom, factor that into your planning. In most cases, adjusting the shelving layout can help accommodate the Electrical Switch Box.
- Once measurements are complete, you can proceed to Step 2 to plan the optimal storage rack positioning.
Below is a typical BTO Bomb Shelter Layout

Step 2: Selecting the First Rack for Wall B
- Given the following storeroom dimensions:
- Wall A: 180cm
- Wall B: 115cm
- Wall C: 70cm
- Wall D: 20cm
- Always place the first rack along the shorter side of the wall—this serves as the main rack, referred to as "Rack A."
- In this setup, a 110cm x 45cm rack can be positioned on Wall B as the main rack.
- The remaining space on Wall B can then accommodate a longer rack, known as "Rack B."
Step 3: Selecting the Second Rack for Wall A
- Determine the remaining space on Wall A, then refer to the L-Shaped Rack size guide to choose the appropriate dimensions for "Rack B."
- To calculate the size of Rack B, subtract the depth of "Rack A" from the total length of Wall A to find the available space.

- In this setup, a 130cm x 45cm rack is selected as the best fit for the available area.
- Note: For most BTO Bomb Shelters, a 45cm depth rack is ideal. Racks with 50cm or 60cm depths may be too large, while those between 30cm and 40cm may be too small—especially for storing larger items like luggage bags.
